Abstract

The postpartum period is a critical transitional phase characterized by maternal physiological recovery and breastfeeding adaptation. One of the most common breastfeeding problems experienced by postpartum mothers is nipple trauma, which may cause pain, discomfort, and potentially interfere with breastfeeding continuation. Evidence suggests that improper breastfeeding techniques, particularly incorrect positioning and latch, are major contributing factors to nipple injury. In the context of homecare services in West Jakarta, direct evaluation of breastfeeding techniques at mothers’ homes becomes an important preventive strategy. This study aims to determine the relationship between proper breastfeeding techniques and the incidence of nipple trauma among postpartum mothers in West Jakarta. Methods this study employed a quantitative analytic approach with a cross-sectional design. The research was conducted within midwifery homecare services in West Jakarta from January to July 2026. The study population consisted of postpartum mothers receiving homecare services and practicing direct breastfeeding. A total of 30 respondents were selected using consecutive sampling. Breastfeeding technique data were collected using an observational checklist covering maternal position, infant position, latch, and effective sucking. Nipple trauma was assessed through visual inspection and categorized according to severity. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis with Chi-square or Fisher’s Exact test at a significance level of 0.05.
